Mercado Contadero

The Mercado Contadero is a local neighborhood eatery and produce headquarters. It’s about as far as one can get from the Centro Santa Fe shopping center without actually leaving the neighborhood. That’s right. Contadero is one of the primary neighborhoods of the Santa Fe area. It’s also one of just five pueblos originarios, that is, original towns, of Cuajimalpa.

So, if you make it as far as Contadero, you can expect a far more solid and traditional town. Centered around the Immaculate Conception Church, it’s an old ranching town. In fact, it feels like the high-altitude mountain town that it was for hundreds of years.  That means, it’s likely a healthier, and fresher place to eat too.

When you eat at any of Mexico City’s hundreds of Public Markets, you’re getting that has never seen a freezer. Vendors are much smaller outfits. And all markets are home to one or two comida corridas, or similar small lunch counters. We put together a guide to get you past your biggest fears in eating at any one of them. It’s healthier and fresher food, and you’re supporting smaller independent businesses and farmers.

The Mercado Contadero is about a 7-minute drive from the Centro Santa Fe, or the Parque La Mexicana. But it’s a world of difference, and a funky, cool country town, believe it or not.
