muca-Roma: University Museum of Science and Art

muca roma

muca-Roma is the University Museum of Science and Art (Museo Universitario de Ciencias y Arte). It’s an exhibition space for works that combine artistic expression with scientific insight. Parts of the system of UNAM museums, they’re all dedicated to sharing university knowledge and culture with the broader public, beyond the university community.

Today’s muca-Roma is a center dedicated to exhibitions, debates, and events that focus on the intersections between design, architecture, and contemporary art in Mexico. Some project interests will extend into Latin America and the world. Exhibitions have also focused on urban studies, environmental planning and ecology, and architecture. The center also provides a platform for research, creation, and formation of a social, reflective, and critical criterion. These are presented in relation to the ways in which aesthetics and technical creation build the human environment.

Opened originally in 1999, the museum quickly outgrew its location at Calle Tabasco 73. The museum then moved to a 19th century building at Tonalá 51. The four-story building makes use of the first and second floors as exhibition space, but there’s also a cafe and bookstore specialized in contemporary art as well as many of the themes and catalogs from the museum’s past exhibitions.

Focus is presently, primarily, on its local community, meaning the breadth and width of Mexico City. The museum also works to make its exhibitions more accessible to the public. The museum’s Facebook page presents running accounts of the many events, debates, and exhibitions in which it takes part.
