Lindavista

Mexico City's Shopping Behemoth in the North:
Lindavista

Lindavista Mexico CityInternational travelers intent on Mexico City's great prices do well to show up in  Lindavista. The  neighborhood, in the  Gustavo A. Madero alcaldía has been a shopping oasis since the 1960s.

Originally laid out in the 1930s by Teodoro Gildred, the neighborhood's a good example of planned urbanization, and precisely at a time when the city's population was booming.

Today it's solidly middle class neighborhood with tons to do. Known for its quaint and affordable California- style homes, the community is unique and picturesque with streets, sidewalks, period homes of wood, carved stone, and red tile roofs.

Once known as Rancho Los Pirineos, it was the setting for Luis Buñuel's Los Olvidados. Film legends like María Felix, Pedro Infante, and Ignacio López Tarso all called Lindavista home.

In the 1950s, a large contingency of Spanish exiles and ex-patriots lived here. And until the 1970s, it was considered a prosperous neighborhood, and destination for people in surrounding neighborhoods seeking employment and diversion.

The famed Lindavista Cinema was a sight to behold and provided entertainment to a large number of city dwellers.  While the neighborhood went into decline at the turn of the 20th century, it has since seen a renaissance, replete with cafes, libraries, churches, and numerous shopping centers and commercial establishments.
