Like many public marketplaces in the city, the Mercado Escandón has a celebrated seafood distributor. In fact, the Playa Escondida, who’ve been in this particular market some 30 years, is sometimes credited with turning the entire market around. Like all public markets this one has gone through lots of ups and downs, to the point where some residents thought it might close.

Part of the reason it never did is that it’s always had that one anchor tenant who’s kept people regularly coming back. Not only is it a market with great seafood, it’s a neighborhood market that’s widely cherished by people all over Escandón and lots of southern Condesa.

On the up and up, now going some years back, the neighborhood market is celebrated as a social and cultural centerpiece as well as the place for people to buy the fresher and better varieties of produce. Still, it’s the Playa Escondida seafood restaurant that really seems to fill the market on weekends.

While the city recognizes all the public markets as a part of the city’s cultural heritage, some of them stand out for being particularly excellent, or even just for being well-loved.  Mercado Escandón seems to fall into this latter category, and the overall disposition of the surrounding neighborhood reflects just that.
